I just added a new radio to the stable, and because it was only $30 I bought one for the wife as well. The Baofeng UV-5R series (5R+ pictured) is a substantial bang for your buck.
I do not usually take kindly to cheap imported equipment, especially electronics, but this radio has proven its value to consumers for years. Nearly 5 stars on Amazon, and great reviews on eHam. The UV-5R series is Part 90 certified, dual-band, and easily programmed with free software (I use CHIRP) and an $8 programming cable.
At $30, I have made this my main SAR radio, while retiring the more expensive Yaesu VX-8GR for less punishing outings. $30 is not only cheap, but it also makes it practically disposable which is perfect for SAR abuse.
